Shoestring Organizing: Declutter and Organize on a Tight Budget

Living on a fixed income or struggling to make ends meet puts professional organizing help, custom storage solutions, and expensive products out of reach for many of us. In episode #158 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, offers suggestions for lower-cost (or free!) strategies and solutions for the do-it-yourself organizer on a modest budget.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Buy Nothing Challenge!

This week’s assignment is to come up with a solution to one of your organizing challenges without spending a dollar (or a Euro, or any other form of currency):

  • Identify a group or collection of items for which you’ve had difficulty finding a storage system.
  • Gather all the members of the set into one place to get a sense of the volume and dimensions of the space they’ll occupy.
  • Look for inspiration at our web site. Start by reading the clever solutions that other members of our audience came up with for this week’s survey.
  • Now go shopping in your own “store.” Check your closets, attic, basement, garage, or wherever you keep stuff that’s not in use.
  • Don’t be afraid to consider unusual options! No box, bin, carton, jar, tray, or piece of unused furniture should be off limits.
  • Still stumped? Describe the problem that you’re trying to solve to friends, family members, or your local Facebook “buy nothing” group to see whether you might crowdsource the perfect answer.
