Function Conjunction: Clutter Issues in Multiple-Use Spaces

Do you have an office that doubles as a guest room, a Zoom studio, a library, a craft room, and a gift-wrapping room? How about a closet that doubles as a pantry, or maybe a spare bedroom that doubles as an overflow closet? In episode #108 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, examines the organizing issues of multi-function spaces and offers strategies for optimizing your use of these versatile rooms.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

You Get Your Thing in Action

This week’s assignment is to improve the usefulness of a multi-function space in your home:

  • Identify a space in your home that’s struggling to serve multiple purposes.
  • Make a list of the uses to which you’d like to dedicate the space and the household members who use it.
  • Plan how you’ll use the space so it won’t default to serving as a catch-all.

Don’t have a multi-function space, and you have trouble finding space for everything you like to do?

  • Spend time this week reflecting on any spaces in your home that aren’t used frequently.
  • Start a list of ways that you might reclaim part (or all) of this space to serve another function.
