The Clutter Fairy Weekly #187

Get Your Motor Running: Is Decluttering a Journey—or a Destination?

In response to a recent survey, an audience member asked, “How do you get your motor running? Is it okay to put the car in Park for a while? Are detours good or bad?” This prompt got us thinking about how much our decluttering process can be like a road trip. In episode #187 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, talks about traveling light, planning your route (or relying on serendipity), and trying to enjoy the journey as well as the destination.

Some content in this episode is based on results of a survey of our audience.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Junk in the Trunk

This week’s assignment is to evaluate an item in your space to decide whether you still want or need it for the journey you’re on:

  • Identify an object in your home that’s a candidate for decluttering.
  • Reflect on our metaphor of decluttering as a road trip, and ask yourself these questions:
    • Am I still taking the same journey I was on when I acquired this item?
    • Do I still want to allocate space in the car for this object?
    • What else might I take along with me if I left this item behind?
  • If you’re ready to lighten your load, let go of this item by gifting, donating, or discarding it.

For the full discussion of this week’s tittle, watch the Weekly Tittle segment on YouTube.

“Junk In The Trunk” one of the best Tittles so far…Since I have a van – my stuff piles up inside. Was powerful to think in the terms of just changing my mind set of of what I really need or add in essentials to the journey I am now on in my decluttering process. Here is my new motto this week: “The Junk Now In My Trunk is Going To The Dump OR “Junk in My Trunk — Dumped At The Dump!”
