The Clutter Fairy Weekly #95

Form, Function, and Feeling: Creating a Vision for Your Tidy Home (Part 1 of 2)

Our homes tend to fill up with the artifacts and debris of our busy lives as much as by conscious choices that we’ve made, so they can come to represent a distorted view of our lives and our tastes. In episode #95 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, suggests designing a vision for your home to guide your decluttering efforts and to reflect a truer picture of who you are and what you love.

This episode is Part I of a two-part series. See Part II.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Creating a Vision, Part I

This week’s assignment is to identify key elements that will shape and support your process of crafting a vision for your home:

  • Start an inventory of the objects or collections that you consider non-negotiable.
  • Make a list of the stakeholders who share responsibility for decision-making and maintenance of your space.
  • Make a list of the functions and purposes that you need your home to serve, including any that aren’t currently being met.
  • Begin identifying items and past choices that feel out of sync with who you are and how you want to live.

I listened to the Nov 16 podcast this morning. I am in the midst of downsizing from a 4 bedroom house with a full basement and garage to a 2 bedroom apartment. It is daunting. But when I listened to Gayle talking about creating a space that is supporting my vision and is forward-looking, I realized I had been planning to pack pictures that had spent the last 18 years (2 homes) in boxes. I put 5 pictures in the donate box and my daughter wants 3 more from our trip to Paris. I’m sure I’ll still be downsizing once I’m in the apartment but today I eliminated one box!
