The Clutter Fairy Weekly #80

Bulky Bags and Itty-bitty Bottles: Organizing for Vacation Travel

Vacation travel means stuffing a week or two of your life into one weight-limited suitcase—or at best, into the cargo space of a car. In episode #80 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, offers pointers for right-sizing your packing to prepare for stress-free vacation travel.

Weekly Tittle

The Weekly Tittle is an exercise designed to focus your attention on a specific space, aspect, or challenge of decluttering and organizing your home. We assign a new tittle in each webcast/podcast, then check on your progress the following week.

Wonderful Time, Wish You Were Here!

In keeping with our theme, we’re assuming you have some travel scheduled, or at least plans for a long, leisurely weekend at some point! To help get you ready to board the plane, hit the road, or take a mental-health break, here’s your assignment for this week:

  • Refresh your toiletries bag or Dopp kit. Remove the contents, then wash or wipe out the bag. Refill shampoo and conditioner bottles with the stuff you like. Consider creating travel sizes of your favorites, or shop for travel-sized bottles. Check over-the-counter meds and prescriptions for expiration dates. Replenish the ones you need, and take out drugs you can’t identify or no longer take. Don’t pack a whole box of over-the-counter meds—grab a single blister pack or a small supply. (But do keep prescription meds in their labeled bottles or boxes in case you need access to the prescription details in an emergency.)
  • If you don’t use a toiletries bag, prep for your next trip by staging a packing area. Set up a small table or find a place where the luggage can lie open, waiting for you to pack it. Seed the luggage with things that you already know you want to take, like gifts for your family or a magazine you plan to read. The staged luggage will help you get the ball rolling early.
  • If your time off will be a “staycation” instead of travel, think through the supplies you want on hand for your time off. Make a list of food and drinks you want, or the restaurants you’d like to order from. What games or movies or books would make the break fun? Put some thought into supplying yourself with the best staycation arsenal ever!
